It's true that it is advisable to travel down south anytime of the year. But December in Australia is very much unique as compared to other countries. While it is freezing in many parts of the world, the whole nations is experiencing a warm weather. December in Australia is mid-summer. But in the Northern part of the country, rain falls or sometimes, storms. Boxing Day is one of the highlights of December events in Australia. It has nothing to do with two persons punching each other. It is a term originated from an old tradition wherein employers box their gifts and gave them to their workers. This is a public holiday throughout the country which kicks off the post-Christmas bargain shopping. It is also celebrated in Canada, UK, Hong Kong and South Africa.

After the Boxing day, it is the start of the heart-thumping Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. This is an international yacht race competition joined by many people from all over the world. This was long been started, way back in 1945 wherein yachts of different sizes face the danger of roaring sea, traveling from Sydney to Hobart. Well-known and prominent people joins this event every year.

In Canberra, capital of Australia, December 4 is the Lighting of Canberra Christmas Tree. On the third week, Christmas Carol Ball is celebrated. It is a large event where participants come in a Christmas costume and take part in dances from John Garden’s book “The Christmas Carol Dance Book."

Sydney also has the same atmosphere in holiday season. Several music festival is celebrated week by week in the city. First week is the Subsonic Music Festival held at the Mountain Valley Resort. It is also the time that Hombake plays, an alternative music festival held at The Domain, Royal Botanical Gardens. Second week is the Festival of the Sun, an annual music festival held on the beach in Sundowner Breakwall Tourist Park, 1 Munster St, Port Macquarie.
