Groups Push For Australian National Commissioner For Children

Tuesday, January 11, 2011 · 0 comments

In Australia, current news is very much followed, just like in any other country. And when the current news reel does contain items about children, it is likely that a lot of people would be tuning in. And one of the issues that a lot of people have closely followed is with regards to the proposed establishment of a National Commission for Children.

It is interesting to note that the issue with regards to the establishment of such a commission is actually not a new one. The proposal has been going around for years now. However, because of the difficulties in putting up such a commission, some major steps are yet to be taken for its development.

One thing that a lot of people might not know is that each state actually has an independent children's commission. These act to promote and protect the rights of children in their respected area, as well as oversee their welfare. So what's a National Commissioner for Children good for?

Proponents pointed out that even though children's rights is very much guaranteed and well protected in Australia, there are still a lot of cases of child abuse and trampling of kids' rights in the country. And while the individual state commissions are indeed doing their part here, there are still much to be done. Here, a National Commissioner would be helpful in organizing a countrywide policy regarding children's rights and welfare.

Another important matter that the National Commissioner is likely to look upon is that of unaccompanied minors. These are children who have arrived in the country without their parents or guardians. Most of these are usually refugees who have been separated from their families during their struggle to enter Australia. However, there are also those that are smuggled by syndicates into the country.

One major problem that many unaccompanied minors face is that they are often subject to Australia's strict migration laws. Under these, they are detained alongside human smugglers and other illegal immigrants, which can be difficult for them. It is hoped that the National Commission, if it gets established will be able to deal with the matter and provide a better solution for them.

As of current, the move to create a National Children's Commission is steadily gaining approval in the country. And many groups are hopeful that, with the amount of support that it currently hast, the government will take notice and consider the steps to develop the commission as a priority.

Thus, there will still be a lot of opportunities available for job seekers in the land down under when the new year comes.

It should be noted that the jobs boom actually began since early last year. Many consider it as a clear sign that the country is now well on its way to economic recovery from the crisis. And because of this, many are looking forward to this year. So, what are the job opportunities awaiting people who are looking forward to working in Australia next year?

Well, for starters the professional sector would likely be a good one to search in. As it is, many companies in the country are now starting to expand their operations. Here, project managers and other project staff are some of the most sought after positions around. This one will be quite a lot, since there are many such positions being opened each day. But probably the most in demand of these professionals in 2011 would still be in the engineering field, where a lot of projects are being established.

In particular, those in the mining industry would likely be in high demand, especially in Western Australia. As it is, the mining boom that the country is experiencing last year is likely to continue into 2011 and probably beyond that. Thus, many mining companies are now in a race to get more people into their fold.

The health care industry is also another area where a lot of job opportunities will likely open in 2011. once again, registered nurses are the most in demand in this area, with Australia expecting to take in thousands this year. However, other medical professionals will also likely be sought after by hospitals in 2011, including physicians and other specialists.

Australia Promotes Multiculturalism

Tuesday, December 28, 2010 · 0 comments

Of all the things about Australia, culture is probably the one thing that interests a lot of people the most. Indeed, the country's culture has come to fascinate a lot of people. And one part of it that has caught the attention of many is multiculturalism.

As it is, multiculturalism is very much a part of the country's identity. Despite the fact that much of the Australian way of life is primarily British, there are still tons of other cultural elements that have been incorporated to it. And as Australia's culture continues to evolve, it is like that more elements will be included into it.

And it is interesting to note where the idea of multiculturalism in the country's culture actually started. As have been said earlier, much of the country's current cultural norms have been brought about by the incoming British settlers during the 18th and 19th centuries. However, the Western settlers and the native Aboriginal populace actually had a generally harmonious relationship, thus allowing elements of native culture to seep into the settlers' own. This is evident in the number of native words in the Australian vocabulary as well as the presence of other elements in its culture.

On the other hand, Australia has also been considered as a major immigration destination. Ever since its early history, the continent has been a major migration route, with people from all parts of the globe arriving here regularly. In the 20th century, the country saw the biggest waves of immigration, as many people fleeing the various wars have seen it as a haven. This, in turn, has brought other cultural elements in, which the country gladly accepted.

Because of the deep roots of multiculturalism in the nation's identity, Australia has always been an active promoter of the idea to the rest of the world. The country regularly sponsors exchanges with other countries to to learn more about their respective cultures. On the other hand, Australia also actively promotes its own to other countries.

However, despite these achievements, there is still a lot of challenges facing Australian multiculturalism. Some of these come in the form of opposition within the country itself, as there are groups wishing to protect a so called “Australian identity”. In response to these claims, proponents and supporters of the concept have said that multiculturalism is, in fact, that identity. Thus, they have said that they will continue the efforts to promote an Australia where a wide variety of people can live in.
